ARTIST

I am an untrained, unskilled and unpracticed artist. I like to play with paint, and oil pastels and colored pencils and paper, mostly. I like to start with a blank page and a blank mind and then to follow where the artistic experience takes me.

Much of what I have done as an artist has been more about the experience of making the art than it has been about the outcome. That said, it is always interesting to me that I really like aspects of the finished products. I feel an intimacy with the works long after they are completed, and can often remember subtle influences in the world around me that were present when was working on the painting.

The most important discovery that I have made is the process of becoming an artist is of understanding freedom as it comes from an action without critical judgment. The paintings have a life of their own and imply an inevitability, they somehow just happen. I am amused by the skill of being skill-less, the art of working from intuition, and the discoveries made long after the process of painting is over.

In the 1980’s I agreed to give painting a try and I have been having fun with colors, shapes and the moves that make a painting come to life ever since.
